Airport Parking Revenue Increases (at Pittsburgh International Airport); More Users, Higher Rates Credited

November 13, 2010 - Tom Fontaine/Pittsburgh Tribune Review - Pittsburgh International Airport's parking revenue is taking off, thanks to increased passenger traffic, recent rate increases and the expansion of long-term lots near the landside terminal.

Rate increases that took effect in June have played a role in increasing revenues. All-day rates went from $21 to $24 in short-term lots and from $11 to $12 in long-term lots.

But the biggest factor, said authority Executive Director Brad Penrod, is the increasing number of passengers. He said long-term lots have sold out 82 times this year, versus 21 times last year.

Officials reported Friday that Pittsburgh's passenger traffic was up 5.9 percent in September compared to September 2009, the sixth straight year-over-year gain. The only longer period of growth in the 2000s was a 17-month stretch ending the month of the 9/11 attacks. That ushered in a bleak period lasting until April, when year-over-year traffic improved just nine times. Read More.

Green Lot Reopened at Detroit Metro Airport (DTW)

November 9, 2010 - Jaclyn Trop / The Detroit News - Travelers can now park at Detroit Metro Airport for as little as $8 a day, just in time for the busy holiday season. The airport's Green Lot, which closed in November 2008 amid a soft market for air travel, reopened Monday as the cheapest (on-airport)airport parking option.

The 1,400-space surface lot serves the North and McNamara terminals through airport shuttle service. Prices at the Green Lot, $10 daily before the lot was shuttered, could rise depending on demand, said Wayne County Airport Authority spokesman Scott Wintner.

This marks the second price drop for airport parking in six months. In June, the airport cut prices at the Big Blue Deck and the surface Yellow Lot to $10 from $16 and $11, respectively. Read the full article at Detroit News.

November 7, 2010 - Daily Times - By PAUL LUCE - In August, the Federal Aviation Administration released its final environmental impact statement regarding plans to enhance capacity and runways at Philadelphia International Airport, located largely in Tinicum. According to airport officials, the capacity enhancement plan would ultimately shave 14.1 minutes off the average delay per operation by 2025.

Estimated to cost $5.35 billion, the plan would require the acquisition of 72 housing units in Tinicum that are east of Fourth Avenue, between Seminole and Iroquois streets. The plan would displace about 80 businesses, affecting an estimated 3,515 employees. It would also result in significant noise impacts to 330 housing units, which would warrant mitigation measures. Hands-On Airport Searches National Rollout of Invasive Pat-Downs This Week

October 26, 2010 - Boston Herald - Airline passengers nationwide will be subjected to new aggressive and controversial body searches likened to “foreplay” pat-downs under the expansion of a program tested at Logan International Airport.

Beginning Friday, the Transportation Security Administration will start using the new front-of-the-hand, slide-down screening technique for passengers at all 450 of the nation’s commercial airports.

The more invasive pat-downs - which include over-the-clothes searches of passengers’ breast and genital areas - have raised privacy issues among civil liberties advocates. TSA screeners previously used pat-down hand motions to search passengers, switching to the backs of their hands when covering sensitive areas such as the torso. Read More.

Midway Airport Privatization Plans Grounded for Now

October 14, 2010 - Chicago Tribune - Mayor Richard Daley said Wednesday that he will not push forward with a second attempt to privatize Midway Airport during the remainder this term, which ends in May. "We're not going to move on it," Daley told the Chicago Tribune's editorial board during a discussion of his proposed 2011 budget. "It will be up to the (next) mayor to make that decision."

Daley has pursued the idea as a way to bring a revenue windfall into city coffers, as happened with the outsourcing of parking meters and the long-term lease of the Chicago Skyway. But a proposed deal to lease Midway for 99 years for $2.5 billion fell through last year when the investors could not secure financing.  Read full Midway Airport article.

DFW Airport Signs New Use Agreement With Airline Partners

Oct 19, 2010 - STAR-TELEGRAM - Dallas Ft Worth Airport announced on Tuesday that it has signed a new 10-year use agreement with its partner airlines.

The airport, which had discussed the new agreement at previous board meetings, says that the contract allows DFW to retain the net revenues from parking, concessions, car rentals and other non-airline sources while airlines pay for the net operating costs of the airfield and terminal through landing fees and terminal rent.

Under the old use agreement, which has been in place since the airport opened in 1974, airlines received a portion of the non-airline revenues. "This new use agreement gives DFW and its partner airlines a solid set of financial expectations for the next decade," said chief executive Jeff Fegan. The airport had sought a new use agreement with its airlines that would boost annual contributions to DFW's capital accounts to help pay for terminal upgrades. Starting in February 2011, the airport plans to spend $1.74 billion to renovate and upgrade terminals A, B, C, and E.  Read full DFW Airport article

Pittsburgh Airport Predicts Jump in Traffic

Oct 9, 2010 - PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE REVIEW - The Allegheny County Airport Authority predicts traffic will take off at Pittsburgh International Airport next year, increasing for the first time in a decade. "We are fortunate to be able to look ahead to 2011 with a positive forecast," said authority Executive Director Brad Penrod.

The authority on Friday adopted a $91.7 million operating budget that predicts a jump in departing passengers of 150,000 next year, to 4.15 million. Pittsburgh Airport's last annual increase in traffic occurred in 2001, when it went up less than 1 percent.

"That's a little more aggressive than I would expect," Sewickley-based airline industry analyst Bill Lauer said about the projected 3.8-percent traffic increase.

"There will be some increase because the local and national economies will be functioning better. That might contribute half. I don't know where they're getting the rest," Lauer said. "It's classic budgeting: 'Let's err on the side of additional revenue.'"

Penrod said the authority's optimism is based on improved economic conditions, increased flying throughout the industry and "the fact that our airplanes are full."

Airlines filled more than 82 percent of available seats on Pittsburgh Airport flights this year, he said. Nationwide, planes are flying about 80-percent full, according to Department of Transportation statistics. Read more...
