Is Your Airport Welcoming Ride Sharing or Telling Them to Take a Hike?

Three Cheers for the Sarasota-Bradenton International! Airport Welcomes Uber!

Last week we editorialized about airports keeping Lyft and Uber off their grounds. In general, how airports and quasi-government entities as a whole resist change and disruptive innovation. Ride sharing services are just the latest disruptive innovation to be blocked. ZipCar and other car sharing services went through the same issues a decade ago and off-airport parking operators have been struggling to deal with the airport entities for years.
However, There are forward looking people, even in quasi-government entities, which realize that the convenience of ride sharing is a good thing. It's good customer service and makes happy customers. Happy customers are good for business. Where McCarran banned Uber and Lyft, Sarasota-Bradenton Airport welcomes Uber in with open arms. They have changed airport policy to make it easier for the customers to take advantage of ride sharing. That is why we should prase the folks at Sarasota Bradenton.
Here is today's InstaParking Airport Parking News. Give us your comments at the bottom of this post.

Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport cuts landing fees, gives people -- and Uber -- longer to pick up people

Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport has extended its free short-term parking time to make room for Uber. That change and a 28 percent decrease in landing fees were part of Monday's approval of the Sarasota Manatee Airport Authority’s 2016 fiscal year budget.
The airport welcomes Uber and other network transportation services this summer. Under the current agreement, network drivers pick up passengers from the parking lot instead of from a traditional cab hub. Bumping the free period from 20 to 30 minutes will give the drivers more time to wait without adding a $2 parking fee onto the passenger's tab, said airport CEO Frederick “Rick” Piccolo. Read More>>

City Council approves next phase of new Charlotte Douglas airport concourse Monday

Charlotte City Council approved spending $7.8 million on the next piece of a major airport expansion plan Monday: a new concourse that will add gates where rental cars once parked.
The concourse will be located just north of the existing Concourse A, with nine new gates for jets to load and unload passengers. Charlotte Douglas International Airport currently has 96 gates, so the additional capacity will push it over 100.
Charlotte Douglas is starting a big new round of construction that’s expected to take the next decade to complete. The airport will expand the roadway in front of the terminal from three lanes to eight, add tunnels and skybridges for pedestrians, expand the terminal lobby and add a fourth parallel runway. Read More>>

Uber Airport Transportation in Today's News Roundup - Sep 24, 2015

Every Tuesday and Thursday InstaParking gives you a round up of news that matters for Airport Parking operators and patrons.
Uber Airport Transportation

Editorial on Uber Airport Transportation

Uber, Lyft and the other ride sharing options in the market fall into the disruptive innovation category. In this case they are tackling transportation in new ways not unlike ZipCar and the other care sharing services that became popular almost a decade ago. There are a lot of arguments for ride sharing services including convenience, less cars on the road, serving a demand, safety, etc. Anyone that has tried to hail a cab in Boston after 11 PM or in any major city in the rain appreciates the option of ride sharing services.
Unfortunately when you are disruptive in an established industry, the incumbents and other stakeholders will do whatever it takes to hold back the disruptive innovation. I include "other stakeholders", because it is not always the incumbents that have the most to loose. For example in New York City, the local government collects millions of dollars per year for the Taxi Medallions and they do not want to see that revenue go away. I saw something similar to this first hand, when a car sharing service was trying to setup locations near airports and airport commissions wanted to make sure they got paid.
We are seeing the same reaction in today's lead story on Lyft and Uber airport transportation.  The Clark Country district attorney has blocked Uber and Lyft from the McCarran International Airport. Do you think the government should be blocking Lyft and Uber airport transportation? Should the government be blocking any innovation? Give us your comments in the comment section at the bottom of this post.

Uber Pays Tickets for Drivers Cited at McCarran

After the Clark County district attorney sent a letter asking Uber and Lyft to cease operations at the airport, the ride-hailing companies have instructed their drivers to comply with the county’s order, the two companies confirmed Tuesday, but Uber has been reimbursing drivers who were cited.
When the ride-hailing companies launched in Las Vegas last week, without a county business license or permits to operate on the county’s airport property, drivers nevertheless dropped off and picked up passengers at McCarran International Airport. As of Monday, the county had cited 237 Uber and Lyft drivers on airport property.
One citation was issued Tuesday to Alfredo Sardinas-Raya, a former taxi driver who was driving for Uber at McCarran. He said that he informed the company, which offered to reimburse him the cost of the $100 ticket.
Uber confirmed that it was paying its drivers’ citations in Las Vegas on a case-by-case basis. Lyft declined to say whether it was paying its drivers’ citations. Read More>>

SLC Airport to Permanently Close Garage Drive-Through Lane

The Salt Lake City International Airport will permanently close the drive-through lane in its parking garage on Oct. 1.
Some people had used the garage lane for passenger pick-up and drop-off, but now will need to use curbside pick-up and drop-off areas on the street outside the terminals. The drive-through lane is being closed for construction that is part of the $1.8 billion terminal redevelopment program that will replace virtually all airport facilities over the next eight to 10 years. The lane closure allows site preparation and demolition of the garage exit ramp and rental car canopies to make way for a new parking structure and temporary roadway system. Read More>>

Airport Parking Pet Boarding in Today's News Roundup - Sep 22, 2015

Every Tuesday and Thursday InstaParking gives you a round up of news that matters for Airport Parking operators and patrons.

Editorial on Airport Parking Pet Boarding

As pet owners, we really love today's lead story on airport parking pet boarding at the Austin Airport. It alleviates some of the stress of planing a trip, by having a convenient location for Fido while you travel. We consulted on an airport parking and pet boarding project that ended up not getting off the ground because of political issues with the local government, but have seen a few of these pop up around the country and are intrigued by the idea. Airport parking pet boarding offers some great competitive benefits to parking lot owners and operators:
  1. Pet owners are loyal and will often pay a premium for great care for a member of their family
  2. Barriers to entry for a parking lot are low, but they are increased by a combination airport parking pet boarding facility
  3. A competitive advantage over other parking facilities and one can argue that the marketing would even entice non-pet owners to give the parking a try. Even non-pet owners respond to ads with cute animals.
Here is today's InstaParking Airport Parking News Roundup. Leave your comments about airport parking pet boarding and the other stories at the bottom of the post.

Park your car – and your pet – at new Austin airport facility
It's been nearly two years since the Austin City Council approved a contract with Scott Airport Parking LLC to build a covered parking facility for 2,000 cars at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, and the project is finally starting construction.
There's an unconventional amenity, too — a pet boarding facility named "Bark & Zoom."
Both services will open in summer 2016 near the intersection of Presidential Boulevard and Texas Highway 71 on airport property. Both also will be open 24/7. Read More>>

Tulsa Airport Sees Decrease in Revenue

Fewer flights and smaller airliners resulted in a 6.5 percent decline in landing fees at Tulsa International Airport this year compared to two fiscal years ago. Tulsa International Airport reported the $405,686 decrease at the September Tulsa Airport Authority meeting Sept. 10.
First place in revenue at $8.28 million, but third on the per-passenger basis at $2.17 was parking, Gann said in his report on concessions. Of the $8.28 million in parking revenues, $7.97 million came from general parking while $313,770 came from valet parking, which has shown steady growth for seven years. It amounted to $26,790 in the 2009 fiscal year. Read More>>

Are Airport Solar Farms Feasible?

In Tuesday's Airport Parking News Roundup, we covered a story on the feasibility of a solar farm at Mitchell Airport. Today's lead again covers airport solar farms. In this case one that is already installed at Tampa International Airport. I am no scientist and I don't have numbers to back this up, but there is probably more sun per day in Tampa than in Milwaukee. Sorry Milwaukee, but they don't get snow in Tampa. Simply put, more sun equals more energy, but unfortunately this article does not get into the cost of the project and expected return. This leave us with two questions:
  • If there are no grants and government money, are airport solar farms feasible?
  • Even if airport solar farms are not feasible without outside money, do these projects still make sense from a standpoint of diversifying energy sources and increasing cleaner energy sources?
We would love to hear your comments using the form at the bottom of the page. Enjoy your InstaParking Airport Parking News for September 15th.

Tampa international airport strives to make the state more environment-friendly

When it comes to going green, Tampa International Airport (TPA) can teach a thing or two to the aviation authorities around the world. Recently it partnered with the city-based electric utility company, Tampa Electrical Co. (TECO) to build one of the largest solar panels in Tampa. The successful deployment of these giant solar panels is expected to fetch more investments in solar power for the Bay area region.

This is by no means is the only claim to fame for the airport that serves 80 non-stop destinations across the continents. As part of its sustainability program, known as the Legacy of Environmental Actions for our Future (LEAF), the busy facility has undertaken an array of green initiatives over the past few years. , The projects under LEAF are aimed at reducing its environmental footprints and attaining carbon neutrality through the implementation of energy-efficient solutions. "It's post-holiday and a lot of business travelers are catching up," said Heath Montgomery, an airport spokesman.

All garage economy and shuttle lots at the airport were full Wednesday afternoon with the exception of the Mt. Elbert shuttle overflow lot. Both of the airport's short-term parking lots are also open but charge $4 an hour and $96 a day. Read More>>

We feel the lead story in today's InstaParking Airport Parking News Roundup on the Mitchell International Airport solar grid is interesting because it covers a topic that everyone feels is a slam dunk. Create parking solar farms by adding solar to current parking lots and parking structures. However, even on paper, parking lot plus solar panels does not always equal savings. The article also touches on the underlying issues so many current airport and airport parking operators run into daily including:
  • Looking for ways to cut costs
  • Airports use of public money
  • Politics, politics, and politics.

Consultant says solar farm at Mitchell Airport wouldn't pay off - Sep 13

Construction of a proposed 5-acre solar energy farm at Mitchell International Airport would not be a good investment for the county or the airport, a consultant concludes in a report to the Milwaukee County Board. The cost of building an array of solar panels needed to generate one megawatt of power is estimated at $6 million, the report says.

Although using that much solar power would reduce airport electricity purchases from We Energies by $80,000 a year, it could take as long as 75 years to pay back or recover the county's initial investment, according to the consultant's report. The report suggests a smaller publicly owned solar array might be financially feasible if enough grant funds are available to significantly reduce costs. Read More>>

You should get paid to park your car at the airport - Sep 1, 2015

FlightCar leverages idle vehicles in the long-term lots, and it's a lifeline for frequent flyers.
It’s funny how we fall into bad patterns. Consider this scenario. You’re going on a weeklong business trip, so you drive to the airport, leave your car in long-term parking, and come back to find it waiting patiently but with $100 due to the cashier. It seems normal, but in actual fact you’ve paid a lot of money for an expensive asset to do nothing at all.
Alternatively, you get a ride in a cramped van, and pay a premium both ways. Not fun, is it?
FlightCar, inspired by AirBNB, is trying to change the equation with a peer-to-peer solution from the sharing economy. In this case, you drive to the airport as normal, but instead of heading for the parking lot you go to an off-site lot operated by FlightCar (now at 17 airports in the U.S., and probably 25 by the end of the year). Read More>>
